On December 15th, 2013, two dozen volunteers from UNITE HERE 2850Planting Justice, and Movement Generation gathered at the North Richmond home of union member and Casino San Pablo worker leader, Isidoro Saravia Ramos. After a full day’s work, we transformed an abandoned lot into a beautiful fruit and vegetable garden that will feed Isidoro’s family and other workers while they continue their struggle for justice in the workplace. As we cleared land, shoveled mulch, and built raised beds, union and community members shared experiences of workplace exploitation, the foreclosure crisis, refinery pollution, borders and prison, but also our hopes and dreams of building community resilience through land and food. Check out the video here
